In 1895, under the jurisdiction of the Church in Russia, he was sent to New York city to minister to the Orthodox Christian Arabs who had immigrated to the United States.  This was the beginning of a fruitful ministry that took him all across the country and even as far as Mexico, performing many marriages and baptisms for all the Arab Christians who didn't have Orthodox places of worship in their adopted land.  In 1904, on the third Sunday of Lent, he became the first Orthodox Bishop to be consecrated in America, at St. Nicholas Cathedral in NY City.  The service was performed by Bishop Tikhon (who later became a Saint) and Bishop Innocent.  He fell asleep in the Lord in 1915, due to heart ailments.

St. John the Forerunner

St. John was the son of the Hebrew priest Zacharias and his elderly wife Elizabeth. Arch. Gabriel announced his birth to Zacharias who at first did not believe his wife could conceive a son at her age. Thus he was struck dumb by the Archangel until the day of St. John's circumcision when he wrote on a tablet that the name of the child would be John just as the Archangel had instructed him to do. Later, when Herod when ordered the massacre of the infants in Jerusalem, Elizabeth hid John in a cave in the wilderness and for this Herod killed Zacharias. According to Church Tradition, shortly thereafter Elizabeth died too leaving St. John to be raised by the Angels in the wilderness. He is called John The Baptist or the Forerunner of Christ because he prepared the people of Israel for the coming of the Messiah. He preached repentance to those that came to hear him in the wilderness. Upon his death by decapitation he also brought the news of the coming of the Messiah to those in Hades in anticipation of Christ breaking the gates of Hades after his suffering on the Cross and before His Glorious Resurrection.

Prophet Elias
(donated to St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Church, Austin, TX)
One of the great prophets of the Old Testament, St. Elias appeared with Moses on Mt. Tabor to Jesus, and was taken up to Heaven still alive on a fiery chariot. He is expected again at the end of times. During his life, he fought against idolatry by challenging the priests of King Ahab and his wife Jezebel to pray to their god Baal to send down fire from above. They prayed and nothing happened. But when St. Elias prayed, God sent fire down from Heaven. This made the people believe and they killed the false priests. St. Elias had also prayed so no rain would fall for 3 years and 6 months because people had turned from God. After they corrected their wrong belief, he call down the rain. He is known to have had power over elements of nature, such as fire and water. In this icon we see the raven, a bird of prey which usually competes for its food, doing something that is against its nature. It is bringing food to the prophet while he was living in the dessert. The prototype is a 16th cty. Russian icon.

St. George and the dragon

St. George was a Tribune in the Roman army who, as legend has it, saved in the name of Christ the princess Cleodolinda from the dragon that was terrorizing the town of Selene. He was later decapitated because of his faith. The slaying of the dragon in the water represents the triumph over the temptations of the ego.

Holy Prophet King David
King David was born the eighth son of Jesse in Bethlehem. He conquered the giant Goliath of Geth with the help of God and became a great warrior. He was persecuted by King Saul and lived in exile but he returned to become the second King of Israel. He had six sons and later committed adultery with Bethsabee. After his repentance for this sin another son was born to him , Solomon, who was to succeed him to the throne . The manner in which David accepted the penalties for his sins made him a model for all penitents. To David are also attributed most of the Psalms in the Bible some of which are prophetic and Messianic in character. He is largely responsible for the development and organization of religious worship. (The Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. IV)
